Case in point.
Once while a few of my coworkers and i had dinner in Rome, we were sipping wine, when one of my peers (peers is such a strange word) took the longest time just spinning the glass in their hand while they attracted every one's attention. They then proceeded to go on to phase two of "i'm a douchebag who disguises as a wine connoisseur" and took in the scent of the wine for a good 5 minutes. Some poor soul fell right into their trap and asked, "oh, are you well versed in wine tasting?"
They answered as if they were not expecting the question, but I know that they were just waiting for some naive soul to inquire. She/He then went on to describe how they spent a week in Bordeaux and went on a wine tour there, and how to assess if a wine is a good wine, the origins of wine....
I think my reasons for being annoyed was two-pronged
1) they, along with the rest of us are in our early 20s. during that period it is all about quantity over quality, i don't care how old the wine is, i wanna know how many bottles i can get for 30 euros to drag to the trevi fountain so that we can drink until 3am.
2.) the second reason this annoyed me is a theory i've always had, that if you are genuinely cultured you do not need to rub it into every one's face. for example, i consider myself fairly well travelled and as an indirect result well versed in wine tasting. i think i have good credentials; my family owns two large vineyards in eastern Europe, in two different countries, that has won, several times the annual wine competition in Bordeaux and that is purchased by several orthodox monasteries, i started drinking wine at an incredibly young age, and i have visited several European vineyards myself where i have sampled different wines. but did i feel the need to spin that wine glass and sip it in a dramatic slow motion? no, wine is wine, if you know about it, great! knowing about wine did not compel me to spent 10 minutes spinning the wine in the glass hoping that i catch some one's eye. I don't need to showcase my knowledge, it is there for myself.
oh and to get the appropriate image for this post, i searched "girl rolling eyes" to portray my annoyed reaction, but the result was several pictures of girls rolling their eyes..but by the looks of it not because they were annoyed ... hmm perhaps quite the opposite....I'll leave you with that.
the third picture ....is my future husband. nothing says "love of my life" like a good ol' guy chugging boxed wine....because I'm classy like that.
